Cheers to Haptic Sensations and Alcohol Consumption: How Glassware Weight Impacts Perceived Intoxication and Positive Emotions

    Get PDF
People often consume alcohol as a means of emotional control. More specifically, people frequently consume alcohol to enhance positive feelings (e.g., happiness) and reduce negative feelings (e.g., stress, tension). The results of two field studies and one laboratory study showed that holding the volume of alcohol consumed constant and varying the haptic (i.e., weight) sensations individuals experience during consumption can influence these emotional responses and also perceived intoxication. Specifically, we manipulated haptic weight sensations by varying the weight of the cup/container (e.g., champagne flute) alcohol was consumed from and showed that consuming champagne from lighter (vs. heavier) flutes leads to enhanced positive feelings, reduced negative feelings, and increased perceived intoxication

Costa Pinto, D., Borges, A., Maurer Herter, M., & Boto Ferreira, M. (2020). Reducing Ingroup Bias in Ethical Consumption: The Role of Construal Levels and Social Goodwill. Business Ethics Quarterly, 30(1), 31-63. https://doi.org/10.1017/beq.2019.25Business ethics research has long been interested in understanding the conditions under which ethical consumption is consistent versus context-dependent. Extant research suggests that many consumers fail to make consistent ethical consumption decisions and tend to engage in ethical decisions associated with ingroup (vs. outgroup) identity cues. To fill this gap, four experiments examine how construal levels moderate the influence of ingroup versus outgroup identity cues in ethical consumption. The studies support the contention that when consumers use concrete construal to process information, they will focus on ingroup cues and make ethical consumption decisions that are aligned with ingroup biases. However, when consumers use abstract construal, they will act more consistently with their inner goals rather than focusing on ingroup and outgroup cues. Social goodwill, which indicates desires to give back to society, is identified as mediating the effects. The findings have important implications for ethical consumption and social influence literature.authorsversionpublishe

How service seasons the experience: Measuring hospitality servicescapes

    Get PDF
Hospitalityservicescapes incorporate physical complexity and social interaction. These two features are often measured separately but rarely measured together in attempts to uncover consumer perceptions within these settings. A psychometric scale developed within the restaurant setting shows a five-dimensional structure for capturing the personality of a hospitality setting. In contrast to attribute-based measures, this measurement approach highlights the importance of service interactions in shaping consumer perceptions. The items proposed account for the dynamism of the setting including the heterogeneity possible due to high service levels. The scale indicates how certain consumer perceptions, as outlined in the dimensions of the proposed scale, are likely to influence consumer outcome behaviors. Managerially, the scale provides a more precise understanding of consumer perceptions within restaurants. As such, the scale can serve as an interesting positioning tool as well a method to evaluate consumer perceptions of restaurants

Herter, M. M., Borges, A., Pinto, D. C., Ferreira, M. B., & Mattila, A. S. (2022). Using Mindsets to Boost Health: How Construal Level and Goal Pursuit Shape Health Message Effectiveness on Cessation Behaviors. European Journal Of Marketing. https://doi.org/10.1108/EJM-04-2020-0290. Funding: This paper received partial support from the Management of Information Research Center (MagIC), project UIDB/04152/2020.ABSTRACT Purpose: The current research examines how construal level shapes the effectiveness of rational (vs. emotional) messages for inducing cessation behaviors. Concrete mindsets foster self-improvement goals, while abstract mindsets boost self-relevance goals. Design/methodology/approach: In four studies, this research examines the moderating role of construal level on health messages and the underlying mechanism of goal pursuit. Findings: Results demonstrate that concrete (vs. abstract) mindsets increase consumers’ intent to engage in cessation behaviors when exposed to rational (vs. emotional) messages. Consistent with our theorizing, we found that self-improvement goals underlie the effects for concrete mindsets, while self-relevance goals mediate the effects for abstract mindsets. Research limitations/implications: The reported effects are limited to health messages focusing on cessation behaviors. Practical implications: This research can help public policymakers to design more effective health messages to foster specific cessation behaviors – quitting smoking and reducing drinking – focusing on concrete (vs. abstract) mindsets and rational (vs. emotional) messages. Originality/value: Our investigation highlights construal level as an important moderator for message appeals (rational vs. emotional) on cessation behaviors, along with the underlying mechanism of goal pursuit, thus contributing to health marketing literature.authorsversionepub_ahead_of_prin

The purpose of this essay is to reflect on two faces of the same contradiction in the contemporary world: the issue of environmental destruction as well as the understanding of social inequality and how the two themes are embraced and inseparable. Since the first discussions about the environment, in the 1970s, inequality was already a fundamental issue. The phenomenon of ongoing environmental destruction goes hand in hand with social inequality and the global phenomenon of poverty. Poor populations are most affected by the destructive production of current capitalist development. This phenomenon is revealed in several ways: the lack of basic sanitation, the absence of drinking water, the “food crisis”, in addition to the poor population living in areas at greatest risk. Therefore, the fight against social inequality also depends on the conservation of the environment. The handling of both problems depends on new ethical, political and economic relations, which develop within the scope of building a new sociability beyond the current absolute domain of capital's interests. Bulk-fill composites were introduced in dentistry to accelerate clinical procedures while providing adequate outcomes. Concerns regarding the use of bigger composite increments rely on the polymerization shrinkage and shrinkage stress, which may generate gaps on the adhesive interface and result in a reduced success rate. Objective: To evaluate the polymerization shrinkage stress of different bulk-fill resin composites and their elastic modulus. Materials and Methods: Fourteen specimens were made for each of the nine different resin composites (seven with 12 mm3 and seven with 24 mm3): Surefill SDR flow (SDR), X-tra Base (XB), Filtek Bulk Fill Flowable (FBF), Filtek Z350XT Flow (Z3F); Tetric Evo Ceram Bulk Fill (TBF), X-tra Fil (XF), Filtek Bulk Fill (FBP), Admira Xtra Fusion (ADM) and Filtek Z350 XT (Z3XT). Linear shrinkage stress was evaluated for 300 s with the aid of a linear shrinkage device adapted to a Universal Testing Machine. For each composite group, seven additional specimens (2x2x25 mm) were made and Young’s modulus was evaluated with a 3-point bending device adapted in a Universal Testing Machine with 0.5 mm/min crosshead speed and 50 KgF loading cell. Results: For 12 mm3 specimens, three-way ANOVA showed that only SDR and TBF generated lower stress after 20 s. Considering 300 s, TBF, SDR, and XF generated the lowest stress, followed by ADM, FBP, XB, and FBF, which were similar to Z3XT. Z3F generated the highest stress values for all time points. Considering 24 mm3 specimens after 20 s, all bulk fill composites generated lower stress than Z3XT, except XB. After 300 s, SDR, FBP, and ADM generated the lowest stress, followed by TBF and XF. For elastic modulus, one-way ANOVA showed that FBF, SDR, Z3F, and ADM presented the lowest values, followed by XB and TBF. FBP, Z3XT, and XF presented the highest elastic modulus among the evaluated composites. Conclusions: Bulk-fill resin composites presented equal to lower shrinkage stress generation when compared to conventional composites, especially when bigger increments were evaluated. Bulk-fill composites showed a wide range of elastic modulus values, but usually similar to “regular” composites
